Matar al Rey
In August 1995, ETA tried to assassinate Spain’s Head of State. The life of King Juan Carlos was in serious danger, while the commando at the order of ETA’s member Juan Jose Rego Vidal, now in prison, moved freely in a rented apartment just 251 meters away from where the yacht Fortune was docked.
The police waited no less than twenty-four days to arrest the commando, simply because they were unaware of the commando’s presence in this apartment until a few hours before they arrested it. Zavala demonstrates with previously unpublished documents that the members of the ETA commando could have killed the King at least on four occasions; and that if they did not do it was because they had not yet decided the way to escape after the assassination.
